Social Distance Prosthetic

In this project, you will create a prosthetic apparatus that defines a 6 foot distance between the user and another person. One user will use a non-traditional, physical means of communication to direct the other user in completing a task. The task will be to make a drawing on paper that is placed on the ground. The instruction for what image is to be drawn will be given on the day of presentation, so each team must be prepared to draw anything.

The 3D object part of this assignment is the mechanism that conveys the instructions. What are the ways one person can inform another? What is the “language” you are going use. Without relying on sight, how do you use the other senses to direct another person.

Each team will choose their own method of making a mark. Options include paint, chalk, ribbon, whatever can be laid on the ground (and not harm he landscape!) The area in which to complete the drawing will be approximately 15’x15’.

Rules:
The person doing the drawing will not be able to see.
The person giving directions will not be able to talk.
There must be a sculptural component.

Materials can include, but are not limited to:

  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • String
  • Wood
  • Wire
  • Bamboo
  • Plastic
  • Found objects like toys, sporting goods, clothes, party supplies etc.
