One Minute, One Exhibition, One Week

One Minute, One Exhibition, One Week

In this short project, you will use common materials and the critique space to mount a short, interactive exhibition inspired by the work of Erwin Wurm. The group of students will conceive at least one sculpture for each person. In the class (you can work collaboratively on this.) Each piece should consist of some combination of objects, these could be found, created, modified etc. You will interact with your objects and document them as Wurm’s works are documented, then you will gather pedestals and the objects and create an exhibition where visitors can interact with the same objects.

You must create some sort of instructions for the visitors, even if it is ambiguous. The instructions can be written, illustrated, or photographs. How would you like visitors to interact with these objects? How can you guide them to that while still fore fronting their individual creativity?

What will the exhibition be called? What are the names of your pieces?

“The idea is for you to exist in this dimension — as an art object yourself — only at
this one time,” he explained. “I am giving ‘sculpture’ a participatory, temporal
factor.”  Erwin Wurm

First, read this article:

For this work, gather some found object and work together to create an exhibition where visitors can interact with objects to make novel forms and compositions. You should think about gravity, positive and negative space, balance, and ambiguity. Create 5 separate 1 minute sculptures.

A few tips:

The sculptures should be ambiguous. Don’t try to make it look like something has happened. Stay away from puns.

Use simple objects in novel ways, and focus on the physicality of the sculpture. Uncomfortableness can be a really interesting dynamic.

Shoot your photos on a simple background, and get extraneous information out of the frame. Use portrait mode to blur the background.

The exhibition will be install in the critique space during class on January 30 and run to February 6. It needs a name and a flyer, and must be advertised in the building and on social media. We will have a critique on the 6th in the gallery before taking the show down.
