Towards complex forms.
Part 1
Gather the small paper forms from earlier in the semester.
Pick one form and repeat it 4 more times. Use rubber cement to stick together the 5 forms to create a new larger form. Pull them apart and try another arrangement. And another.
How many ways do these forms fit together?
How can you vary the placement of the small units to create variety in the larger form?
Slide them up and down, side to side, what kinds of negative spaces do they create?
Take pictures of each arrangement. Which one is most interesting? Why?
Part 2
When you have a pleasing paper sculpture made from the repetition of the small paper forms, translate the vertices of the planar construction into a wire sculpture. Make the wire sculpture at least 2 times as big as the paper one.
Since the planes are not there, how do you shore up the structure? Do you need to add any extra lines to support eh vertices? How does the sculpture change no that it is mostly immaterial? Are the forms still implied, or lost in the complexity of the lines?
