So far this semester, we have looked at how things can be recontextualized, modified and remixed, what happens when things are erased or replaced, and how cultural languages can be subverted. In this project, you will use these conceptual strategies to create a work that attempts to put forth a point of view, address inequality, or right some wrong. This will be a work that addresses art as activism specifically.
It is important to differentiate between art, activism, and data visualization. Each of these things is a valuable and important field, and each can be used to support and extend the others. However, without careful and thoughtful use, anyone of these areas can overwhelm the others. Some works heavy in “art” elements may be too abstract or subtle to convey a distinct message, while some works heavy in data visualization techniques may just present information without regards to other contexts and without subtlety. Works based strongly around a specific cause may be heavy handed if not done with nuance. As the artist, it is important to consider all these areas in order to create a work that addresses a specific area with nuance and presents information in a useful and poetic manner.
For this assignment, you will make an AR experience using photoshop compositing techniques, animated gif, and video. Your work should address a topic of your choice. Don’t limit yourself to easy or popular topics, look to your own experiences and situations to help define an area where you would like to see change.
Requirements:
250 word statement about your work. This needs to be available as an overlay in your AR experience. Think of it like an info button.
A 1500 word (minimum) paper that presents your project. This should include documentation of your work as well as any relevant research related to your project. Includes properly cited bibliography. This will function as your exam and will be equal to a project grade.
A fully realized AR experience built in HP Reveal. Your content needs to be relevant to your idea, but should be complex enough to justify a whole project grade.
Due next class:
Proposal for your project. I will meet with each person or group individually to discuss your project and its possibilities.
