In this experimental project, I am going to ask that this class collaborate with me, as both an artist and a professor.
The work of art may thus consist of a formal arrangement that generates relationships between people, or be born of a social process; I have described this phenomenon as “relational aesthetics,” whose main feature is to consider interhuman exchange an aesthetic object in and of itself (Bourriaud 2005/2001: 32-33).
What I propose: Lets make a collaborative work. The students will work together to make a large sculpture from recycled materials, and I will add and respond to the work with video, audio, or additional sculptural forms.
Here are the requirements for the project:
1. The structure will be accessible inside and out
2. It will be built of recycled wood and cardboard
3. It will be large enough to hold at least 10 people.
The form and techniques you will use to make it are up to you. I will demonstrate a technique that can be used to make structures quickly, but you may decide as a group to alter or modify the process.
I can suggest a few strategies that, if followed, will help you design and build:
-Small objects may be enlarged to create larger structures
-Think about facets and polygons when you are representing something organic with something planar.
-Consider the experience of moving in, through, and out of the form. How does the space expand and contract?
-Consider the difference between scale and proportion
-Consider the size relationship of the sculpture to the site
-Consider Serra’s Verbs from the last assignment when working with the materials
Here is a timeline for the project
4/13 Project introduction- Homework- build rough cardboard models
Read this PDF: Pallasmaa_The-Eyes-of-the-Skin excerpt.pdf
Make a small model and some sketches to share with the group
4/20 Group meets to decide on form and begin building base
Look at the ideas and models of the group
Decide on a theme or concept and start the base
4/27 Group workday
Continue building the structure, working collaboratively
5/4 Group workday
Start skinning the form with cardboard
5/11 Final critique- may be shifted to evening.
